The creator of a novel wall hanging that tells sea users about the flow of water in the South of England, has devised a new chart.
The Moon Map, is designed by William Thomson and has gone on sale, and those who buy it this weekend will get a discount if purchased online.
He said: “The moon map shows how the rotating of the earth makes high and low tides, and the orbiting of the moon makes spring and neap tides."
He added: “This is interesting information for anyone whose hobby involves the tide - beach combers, sunbathers, dog walkers, coasteerers, boaters, swimmers, fisher-men/women, sand castle builders.”
William, his partner, artist Naomi Tipping, their baby daughter Ottilie and springer spaniel Alfie went on their travels in a converted van this summer, selling William’s first creation, the Tidal Compass.
Designed in a smart black and blue with a contemporary nautical appeal, the Tidal Compass is a fresh take on complicated flow of water charts, which can leave even accomplished sailors and sea users scratching their heads.
He created variations for most towns across the South coast, the first was for our stretch of water from Dover to Thanet, including Deal. It was endorsed by members at the Downs Sailing Club in Walmer and colleagues at Walmer RNLI Lifeboat Station. Spurred on by its popularity, William extended the range including locations like the isle of Wight and areas as far west as Cornwall. And this summer’s sojourn was all about marketing them among arty and sea-faring circles along the coast - recorded affectionately in a blog.
Taking the same concept and following the same colour scheme, the Moon Map is both an attractive and practical accompaniment to the Tidal Compass.
William added: “If you’re the prepared planner, this may be your opportunity to get that special person their perfect gift - at a discount - and they won’t even know.
“We also have a new feature where you can customise charts by adding a personal note to the bottom, and you can also buy it framed directly from our website.”
