CHURCHES and a primary school have joined forces to help save lives in one of the poorest parts of the world.

Walmer Parish Churches and The Downs are raising cash as part of their harvest celebrations to buy mosquito nets for people in Madagascar.

Through their parish link with Toliara, on the island off Africa, money is being used so the mesh sheets can be given through local health clinics to those most in need.

Bishop Todd McGregor is visiting Walmer from Madagascar this week to speak to church members and schoolchildren about the idea, which he said can make a real difference helping people to stay healthy and work their way out of poverty.

Children at The Downs have already held a non-uniform day where pupils gave a pocket money donation in return for wearing the clothes of their choice, raising more than £300.

Members of St Mary’s and St Saviour’s churches have been given badges saying “I’m closing the net on Malaria” to distribute in return for donations. They hope to raise £1,000.
