Roads surrounding the former Richborough Power Station will be closed for about 30 minutes while the three cooling towers and chimney are blown up on Sunday.

Once the iconic structures have been demolished, the exclusion zone will be removed and the roads should re-open soon after 9am.

Downfast Demolition Services, a Ramsgate-based firm, is carrying out the operation, due to take place at about 9am.

A Sunday morning was chosen as the ideal time to minimise inconvenience on the roads.

Representatives from nearby businesses learned about the plans at a safety briefing on Wednesday.

Prior to the explosion, staff from these businesses will be taken out of the exclusion zone by bus.

They will remain in a safe place until the towers have been demolished and returned to their places of work when the all clear has been received.

There will be about 30 sentry points, seven of those will be attended by police, ensuring nobody attempts to enter the exclusion zone.

The River Stour will also be shut off at low tide.

He said The National Grid has commissioned a film company to record the blasts with a number of "sacrificial" cameras positioned close to the buildings.

"They will continue transmitting footage right up until they are destroyed," he added.

Preparations will begin at about 4am with people shutting down the wind turbines.

Roads will be closed at about 8.45am. There will be a one minute warning siren sounded at 8.55am and a warning rocket will be let off. Then the towers will come down separately followed by the chimney, with the detonators being pressed within six seconds of each other.
