He fell on to the pavement splitting his head and nose open and breaking his glasses. He also fractured his wrist.

Two members of the public rushed to help him: a woman, who is thought to have got out of a car, and a man.

Dr Betts said: “We don’t know where they came from.”

Together, the kind duo comforted Mr Betts, putting pressure on his wounds and wrapping him in a foil blanket, until professional help arrived.

It is thought the woman was a trained first aider.

Dr Betts said: “She put her skills to good use.”

Mr Betts lost a lot of blood. It soaked through the man’s coat and a towel.

Dr Betts said: “With the amount of blood pouring out, I honestly think he could have died. The paramedics backed me up.

“As far as I’m concerned they saved his life.”

He was taken in an ambulance to the QEQM hospital in Margate for a full CT scan. During the trip he was able to ring his sister.

She said: “He was so grateful, he kept saying he wanted to thank the two people.”

Dr Betts is eager to thank the two do-gooders personally as well as reimburse the foil blanket, towel and gentlemen’s overcoat.
