“It’s Christmas!” Noddy Holder’s gritty rock voice bellowing powerfully over Slade’s festive blockbuster is an established part of Christmas pop culture.
And other songs by the likes of Wizzard, Greg Lake, John and Yoko, Shakin’ Stevens and many more immediately cue you straight into the feel, smell and sights of the festive season.
So that set me thinking, dear readers. We have so much musical talent in and around Thanet, Sandwich and Deal that I am sure we could come up with our own festive pop song.
It need not be mournful or sad like some of the yuletide offerings have been – Les Gray and the Mud lads with Lonely This Christmas still has thousands of people weeping into their hankies every year.
What we need is an uplifting, catchy, rocky pop song of around three minutes with a memorable hookline, a hummable melody and a positive message. Not asking for much are we! But I know you can do it.
Send your entries to me on CD and we will play the top three during the run-up to Christmas if myself and my judges think they are worthy.
There’s no time like the present, so get to it today and who knows, we might even find a little gem to rival the mighty Slade and what is arguably the best ever Christmas song.
Good luck – and let me be the first to wish you Happy Christmas while we are enjoying a lovely Indian summer in late September. Shocking!!
