Rehearsals are well under way for an unusual musical performance of Hamlet.
This version is written by Penny Dorritt from Deal, who has set it to music by Arthur Sullivan, renamed it Elsinore and dropped the tragic ending in favour of a happy option.
It has even seen the cast visit the Viking ship in Cliffsend for inspiration.
Writer Penny said: “The comedy is evident from the start as a band of happy Vikings sing of their return home to Elsinore after a successful war. And thus the scene is set for an evening of sparkling lyrics and larger-than life characters who bring Shakespeare’s Hamlet to life in a way not seen before.
“In this version Hamlet is rescued by a vociferous crew of Viking women and a band of pirates. They escort him safely home.
“After more unlikely escapades and happenings, all the happy couples are reunited and Hamlet and Ophelia can marry after all.”
The performance will be in St George’s Hall, off Deal High Street, next Friday and Saturday, September 4 and 5. It is to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Deal and Walmer Macmillan Cancer Support Committee and all proceeds will go to the charity.
Chairman Christine Hall said “During the past 40 years, with the help and support of the people of Deal and surrounding area, the committee has raised almost £375,000, which has been reallocated to the area.”
The production is sponsored by Bright and Bright and many local businesses have donated to a special raffle.
Performances are at St George’s Hall off the High Street in Deal on September 4 and 5 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 including light refreshments and a free drink in the interval.
