Jemal Johnson too good for Blue Square Bet South, says Dover Athletic boss Nicky Forster

Dover boss Nicky Forster has been explaining the background to the surprise signing of former Premiership star Jemal Johnson.

The 26-year-old American-born player, who scored a penalty in the 3-1 win against Truro on Saturday, is without a club after League 2 Southend terminated his contract in December after being arrested in October.

Forster said: "Jemal’s release has been well documented and his situation means he has been unable to accept a deal to play overseas.

"He is a friend of Donovan Simmonds and that’s how the invitation came about. He wants to carry on playing while he sorts himself out."

Johnson (pictured) has played for Manchester United, Blackburn and Wolves and Forster said: "If we get the ball to him he will cause problems because he is too good for this level.

"He will be here for the short-term and maybe until the end of the season."
