Man killed in cliff plunge

Firefighters from Deal were among emergency services called to cliffs at Capel on Sunday after a man was reported to have fallen from the top.

It is believed he was with a group of Polish friends when he disappeared over the edge.

Members of the technical rope rescue team from Deal Fire Station were lowered to check ledges on the cliff face in case the man was laying injured, but he could not be found.

Coastguards were sent to the area below the cliffs and the Pole was found dead in foliage. An RAF search and rescue helicopter winched the body to the high land.

Police have not yet named the Polish man, who was believed to be in his 30s. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Dover Coastguard senior watch manager Peter Legg said: “The man apparently slipped down the grassy area at the top of the cliffs and then disappeared. There is a shelf at the top and then a sheer drop.”

Mr Legg warned people to stay on the marked paths and not to go too close to the cliff edges.
