Extra police officers are being brought into Dover to tackle anti-social behaviour, drug and alcohol abuse in the town, the Mercury can reveal.
It’s the latest move in a series of measures which have been launched to address the problems caused by a minority of people.
Dover district commander Chief Inspector Steve Barlow said the new team of eight officers, led by a sergeant, will start work this month, patrolling throughout the day and evening during the week and at weekends.
Police had already been taking a tough stance against those causing a nuisance in the town. Some have been arrested and others have been ordered out of the town centre.
“I have met local residents and members of the business community and listened to their concerns that the behaviour of a few is spoiling the quality of life for those living, working and visiting Dover,” said Ch Insp Barlow.
“I have always been committed to doing what we can to tackle crime and ensure the safety of those living in the town within the resources that we have available. I am now going to use some of those resources to create a team which will focus on the town centre.”
Last week a dispersal area was introduced giving officers the power to move troublemakers on and take those under the age of 16 who are causing a nuisance back to their homes.
