I am about to embark on one of the biggest charity challenges I have ever faced – 50 different forms of transport in just 50 hours.
Madness for sure but there is method in my madness – it’s all about raising money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind.
It is a daunting task but I will be in great company – my wife Donna, and Tracie Stevens, marketing manager at Westwood Cross retail complex and her partner, make up the team that has pledged to take on this crazy venture to raise £5,000 if at all possible.
Sponsorship is the key and I ask all readers and listeners to get behind this extremely worthwhile appeal.
The money will pay for the training and development of a guide dog from a puppy to a full working adult dog.
We have the full support of Hiliary Johnson and the team at the Thanet branch of the charity, which as we all know does such great work locally.
So far we are looking at cars, buses, trains, planes and boats, but there is a lot of room for the imagination to kick in. A hearse, Ramsgate lifeboat, a Thanet council dustcart and a fire engine are already lined up.
Other suggestions include a unicycle, roller skates, a bouncy space hopper, a beach donkey, helicopter, go kart, dodgems car. How about a mini hovercraft or even a trandem, the three-seated bike used by The Goodies in their hit television series?
We are open to any suggestions to help us hit our target.
We leave Westwood Cross at midday on Friday, August 21 and hope to return there by 4pm at the latest on Sunday, August 23, with our task completed.
Please let me know any ideas for transport to help us make the magic 50 mark. Email me at the address at the end of this column.
And we would all be delighted if you could support our appeal. To find out more, go online to www.justgiving.com/WX-Guidedogchallenge
Justgiving sends your donation straight to The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you’re a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more.
