Pound signs were reportedly keyed into vehicles during a spate of car vandalism in Deal last night.
Residents have taken to social media to vent their anger over the alleged crimes - but police are yet to comment.
It is understood incidents have taken place in Hamilton Road, Cornwall Road, Downs Road and Balfour Road as well as Quern Road, Mill Hill and Churchill Road.
It is thought up to 40 cars have been targeted.
A resident in Quern Road, who didn't want to be named, told KentOnline: "I can’t understand why someone feels the need to cause so much damage.
"And even go as far as carving pound signs into some people's cars as if to taunt that it will cost so much money to sort it out."
A Mill Hill resident said: "It's heartbreaking.
"You work hard to keep yourself afloat and look after the things you own, then someone does this. Why?
"They won't have to pick up the bill for it."
Sergeant Ben Norbury from Dover Community Safety Unit said: "PCSOs are in the area carrying out enquiries and reviewing any CCTV opportunities.
"We thank those who have spoken to officers already, and would ask that if any residents have CCTV footage or information about the damage, to contact us and assist our investigation.
"Anyone who witnessed any of the incidents, or saw anything suspicious, is asked to call Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting reference 13-022.
"Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers in Kent anonymously on 0800 555 111."
