The Princess Royal has paid tribute to Walmer Science College for its introduction of a maritime studies course at the school in Deal.
Yesterday (Wednesday) her helicopter touched down on the field to start her visit and she was met by glorious sunshine and applause from pupils waving Union Jacks.
Princess Anne unveilled a plaque to mark the opening of the studies centre and met pupils who have just started learning about sailing.
She said: "Today has been rather a treat. This type of marine studies centre is unusual - far too unusual I would argue from the prospective of the marine sector."
The Princess Royal, who is patron of the Royal Yachting Association, said she was grateful Walmer Science College had introduced the new courses, especially in the east Kent area so close to the busy shipping routes in the Channel.
She told the children and special guests: "There is a great deal of scope here, enjoy your opportunities and best wishes. Thank you very much for setting up something I rather hope others will notice.
"Your hard work has paid off. You have taken time and effort and it has been worth it for sure."
Pupil Natasha Miles, 14, presented the royal visitor with flowers and said afterwards that she had been impressed with Princess Anne's sense of humour.
She added: "She was really nice. I was nervous and never been that involved in the royal family, but this has been a really good opportunity to meet her."
