A smash and grab raid at a Deal jewellers has left the owner angry and staff in nearby High Street businesses shocked.

Jeremy Ward, 46, owner of the Ward and Corrigan shop for 14 years, said the police described the crime as "brazen."

The raid by two people, possibly men, wearing full-face helmets on a blue motorbike, happened at about 4.30pm on Monday.

Mr Ward said: "I heard an initial bang and saw someone had turned up on a motorbike. A man jumped off with a hammer and starting smashing the front windows, then grabbed as much jewellery as he could."

Police said one of the men is understood to have broken part of the front window with a hammer before grabbing jewellery from the display and jumping back on the bike, possibly a Yamaha.

Mr Ward added: "I went outside, but by then they had gone. There was a total mess in the shop with glass everywhere.

"It left me feeling very angry. But I am determined to carry on and we were back open for business on Tuesday morning."
