Reports a man had walked into the sea fully-clothed sparked a search operation in Deal in the early hours of this morning.
Walmer RNLI launched both of its boats at about 2.10am and was later joined by a coastguard helicopter.
Crews searched the area to no avail for more than two hours before the operation was called off.
It is believed it could have been a hoax.
Lifeboat operations manager Denis Brophy said: “We were asked by the coastguard to assist after they’d received a report that a man had walked into the sea fully clothed near Dolphin Street.
“We launched both of our boats and they sent their helicopter as well.
“We searched for two hours until the coastguard and police called it off.
“As far as we know nobody has been reported missing. We believe it was a hoax call.”
Four police cars also attended the scene.
Police press officer Martin Very said: “At 1.52am on Thursday, September 15, we received a report regarding concern for the welfare of a man in Dolphin Street, Deal.
“Police officers went to the scene to search for the man. The coastguard boat and helicopter also attended.
“At this stage the man has not been located and enquiries are on-going.”
