A new £6,500 piece of equipment is transforming the lives of residents in lockdown at Walmer Care Centre near Deal.

For 18 months staff have been fundraising for the Omi, an interactive projection system which features games, music and can be used for social activity engagement.

Funds were raised through a quiz night with the help of the community donating raffle prizes, a car wash day, bake sales, tombolas, early morning car boot sales and a sponsored firework night.

Staff members took on personal challenges like Debbie O’Connor who climbed the O2, conquering her fear of heights and raising £1,207, and family member Deana Slaughter who completed a sponsored swim.

The families of residents made contributions and donations were also given in memory of Joan Burman and Jean Redman.

The machine was delivered last month, half way through lockdown, and has already brought so much joy to the Marine Road home.

Jo Allen, deputy manager, said: "We had our target and I knew we would reach it, but to do it during this unprecedented time when our residents are being shielded and will benefit from it most, is fantastic.

"The Omi has already proven to put smiles on faces and is so much more than we originally thought.

"It was a true community achievement so thank you to everyone from the bottom of our hearts."

Manager Jill Hyland has also extended her thanks to the staff, families and volunteers for their support, determination and efforts in securing the equipment.
