Rob Paul enjoyed watching Europe’s stunning Ryder Cup triumph on Sunday having just returned from a memorable golfing trip to Chicago of his own.
The 30-year-old Walmer & Kingsdown GC member (pictured) was in the Europe side who took on the USA in the One-Armed Golfers’ "Ryder Cup" at the Hilton Indian Lakes Resort in Chicago the previous weekend.
And eight-handicapper Rob, who plays one-handed after being born with cerebral palsy, played a full part as Europe crushed the USA 20½-7½ to inflict more golfing misery on ‘Uncle Sam’.
In what was his third appearance in the competition, which is officially called the "Fightmaster Cup," Rob, who lives in Granville Road, picked up 3½ points for the Europe side.
He won one foursomes, one fourball and halved another, and then won his final day singles 6&5 against Carsons Novins.
"The team played well and to beat the USA on their own patch by that margin was just fantastic and it’s the best I’ve played in the competition," said Rob, who works in the American Golf store at Stonelees GC.
During their stay in Chicago, the Europe team were taken on a visit to Medinah Golf Club, the Ryder Cup venue and Rob added: "It was great to be able to watch the Ryder Cup on television having been at Medinah just a week earlier.
"We were shown around the team rooms and the clubhouse, which is massive. We also saw the first and 18th holes and you could see how they had cut all the rough back."
