A rock singer who was born and bred in Deal will attempt to put the town on the map when she appears on The Voice UK this Saturday.
Rozzy Turner, who now lives in Guildford, Surrey, working as a commercial contracts assistant in gas and oil, will sing Bang Bang by Jessie J in her bid to impress the coaches; Sir Tom Jones, Rita Ora, Ricky Wilson and will.i.am.
The 33-year-old, who went to Warden House Primary School in Deal and St Edmund’s Catholic School in Dover, attended the blind audition stage of the BBC talent show with her family including her dad, Richard, and mum, Janet, of London Road, Deal.
They watched her sing live from backstage with presenter Marvin Humes and will also appear on the show.
Growing up, Rozzy was a member of the local amateur dramatic group the Guild Players and also attended Deal Dance Centre at Linwood.
She said: “I’m proud of coming from Deal. I come back all the time.”
She auditioned for the first season of The Voice UK in 2012 but was unsuccessful. Last year, she was scouted by a music producer who saw her singing in a competition in Archer Street Bar in Soho. She was called a few days later and asked to audition for the show.
She is one of 47,000 people who auditioned and 160 who got to sing in front of the judges.
Rozzy has had a love affair with music from an early age, stemmed from listening to her mum singing Shirley Bassey and the Carpenters and her dad playing his Led Zeppelin and Rod Stewart records. Having worked as a pub manager and a waitress, Rozzy decided last year that she wanted to fully focus on music.
She said: “I have to sing. I have to get it out of my body.”
She added: “I’m just a normal girl that the public can associate with. I just want to come out of the nine to five.”
Tune in to BBC One at 7pm on Saturday to see if Rozzy gets through.
Rozzy is the second contestant in the district who has featured on the BBC talent show in two weeks, along with Oli Bond from Eastry.
