Disabled who has cerebral palsy, walks 2,600 metres over 26 days to help NHS during coronavirus crisis

A disabled man is raising money for the NHS by completing 100 metres on his walking frame every day for 26 days.

Sam Cory, 31, from St Margaret’s between Dover and Deal, lives with cerebral palsy and lives in Hardy Road with grandparents Henry and Pam Williams.

Starting on April 26, Sam has been walking, unaided, 100 metres every day on the road outside his home, watched by his grandparents and neighbours.

He is due to finish his challenge on Thursday.

Each step is a struggle for Sam, and it takes him up to 10 minutes to complete the 100 metres using his walking frame.

He has been starting his challenge at 3pm every day and has been out in all weathers - sunshine, wind or rain.

Sam has been sponsored by friends and neighbours, and by people who have seen photos and videos of his heroic efforts on his Facebook page.

"It is very, very important to help the NHS at this time..."

When Sam started his challenge, he was hoping to raise £100, but he has smashed this target, and is on course to top £800.

Grandfather Henry said: “This was Sam’s idea. He is only too aware of how much we are all relying on the emergency services during this coronavirus lockdown, and he wanted to do something to help.

“He has been out in all weather, and three times got very wet, but that didn’t stop him.

"Pam and I and his mum Michelle are very proud of him."

Sam, who chose 26 days for his challenge because 26 miles is the marathon distance, said: “My challenge has been hard work because sometimes it has been raining and cold, but it has been worth it.

"It is very, very important to help the NHS at this time.

“I am very grateful to everyone who has sponsored me”.

Anyone still wishing to sponsor Sam can do so by visiting his JustGiving page.
