Serial thief Chay Lenthall jailed for shoplifting in Deal

A serial thief is spending 330 days behind bars after pleading guilty to shoplifting and failing to surrender to court bail.

Chay Mark Lenthall, of East Cliff in Dover, pleaded guilty to one count of shoplifting and one count of failing to surrender to court bail.

He pleaded not guilty to six counts of shoplifting - but was still convicted by Medway Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, October 8.

On Sunday, December 14, the 33-year-old, who used to live in Deal, stole five pairs of trainers worth £250 from a shop in High Street, Deal.

On Tuesday, January 13 he stole meat worth £25 from a shop in London Road, Deal.

He went on to steal a TV and DVD player worth £189.18 from a supermarket in West Street, Deal on Monday, April 27.

On Saturday, May 2 he stole a vacuum cleaner worth £250 from the same place and on Sunday, May 10, he stole champagne worth £129.99 from The Strand Wine Company in The Strand, Walmer.

The shop’s management posted this picture of Lenthall the next day via the Deal Watch page on Facebook appealing for witnesses.

The post said: “JUST A WORD OF WARNING:

“This man helped himself to a very nice £129.99 bottles of champagne on Sunday 10 May between 10.30 and 11am. Police have been told and given the full CCTV.”

lenthall also stole meat, costing £80 from a shop in Mill Road, Deal, on Thursday, May 14 and on Thursday, June 11 he failed to surrender to bail at Thanet Magistrates’ Court without a reasonable excuse.

On Friday, September 25 he stole more meat worth £93.19 from a supermarket in Moat Sole, Sandwich.

And on Tuesday, October 6, he failed to surrender to bail at Medway Magistrates’ Court without reasonable excuse.

Along with the prison sentence, he must also pay £913 compensation and a £180 criminal courts charge.
