Stay safe - that's the Christmas message from Kent Fire and Rescue Service.
Over Christmas the risk of fire can be greatly increased and normal safety precautions can easily be forgotten, especially when alcohol is consumed.
Deal Fire Station manager John Yore said: "Christmas should be a time of fun and festivities, but it’s all too easy to overlook your usual fire safety efforts".
He advises that all family members, visitors and neighbours know what to do in the case of fire and that smoke alarms are checked every week. Candles should be kept on heat resistant surfaces, out of reach of children, and decorations must not be attached to lights or heaters as they can easily catch fire.
Mr Yore added: "Be aware that most fires start in the kitchen so cooking must never be left unattended. Switch off electrical appliances when they are not in use and do not overload sockets with too many plugs.
"Christmas tree lights must conform to the British Standard and switched off and unplugged when left unattended. Outdoor electrical equipment should use an RCD, a safety device that can save lives by instantly switching off the power, and any chimneys in use must be regularly swept to avoid soot and ash catching fire."
