Students whose course was cancelled mid-way through their studies say they are angry with the way they have been treated.
Megan Glover, 17, was one of 15 youngsters who completed the level two public service course at K College in Folkestone in July, and seven of them planned to sign up for the level three course this week.
But Megan, who lives at Elm Park Gardens in Dover, said they have now been told the course has been cancelled because there were not enough students to make it viable.
She said she had hoped to complete the course in the next two years, and then join the Royal Navy.
K College'svice principal for learner success Bernadette Katchoff said one of the single biggest obstacles to getting a job after completing the course was proving to be students’ levels of fitness.
“To ensure students have the best chance of successfully progressing to their career of choice, a package of ’work ready’ skills is given to each student; for Public Services, the course to raise fitness levels is part of this package.
“When students have raised their fitness levels to the required standard, they can continue with a redefined public services qualification at K College."
Megan said she admitted she was not the fittest person. "Neither am I particularly academic,” she said. “But I was looking forward to the level three course, which was due to last for two years, and I hope to be accepted in the Royal Navy at the end of it. Other students wanted to gain employment with other public services."
Megan is now having an interview at Canterbury College to see if she can join a similar course there.
