Dover twice came from behind to earn a point in Blue Square Bet South at Sutton on Tuesday.
Dover showed great determination to strike back and almost snatched a late winner that their second half performance had deserved.
Knowing that his side would face a tough test at Gander Green Lane, Nicky Forster set his team up in a 4-5-1 formation, aiming to win the midfield battle. This left Calum Willock up-front on his own, and Billy Bricknell on the right wing.
It seemed to have the desired effect, as a tentative first half was played out, and the one moment of real quality gave Sutton the lead. Tom Kavanagh collected the ball 30 yards out, and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner that gave Lee Hook no chance.
Forster reverted to 4-4-2 at the break, pushing Bricknell up front with Willock, and within a minute of the restart, the former had levelled the scores. Cogan’s free-kick wasn’t cleared, and the ball fell kindly for Bricknell to tap home from close range.
Whites were completely on top, asking numerous questions of the Sutton defence, so it was against the run of play when the home side re-took the lead just before the hour mark. A great cross from the right by Anthony Riviere picked out the run of Sam Rents at the back post, who headed into the net via the underside of the crossbar.
Terry Dixon and Forster came on as Whites pushed for another equaliser, and it finally arrived with five minutes to play. Again it came from a Cogan set-piece, as his free kick picked out Shane Huke (pictured) in the area and he headed into the net to the delight of the large number of travelling fans.
