Almost 3,000 street lights have been replaced in a £1m investment across Dover district.

Energy saving LEDs and 200 concrete columns have replaced 2,750 existing lights.

It includes all ornate ‘heritage’ fittings helping Dover District Council [DDC] to make a 70-80% energy saving.

The authority is aiming to become a net zero carbon emitter by 2030 at the latest, and has committed to support the whole district to be carbon neutral by 2050.

It says greenhouse gas emissions have already been reduced by 57% since 2008/09.

Cllr Chris Vinson, cabinet member for climate change, said: “We are delighted to see the completion of this important project.

"These brighter, more efficient LED street lights will help people to feel safe at night, as well as helping to reduce light pollution, and will save energy, reducing our carbon footprint for the future.”

The works were carried out by contractor VolkerHighways.
