Dover District Council continues to be Conservative led, with the Tories winning 26 seats in the elections on Thursday.

The Lib-Dem feelings across the country were reflected locally as the two Liberal Democrat members lost their seats at the Whitfield ward. Labour now has 19 members of the district council.

Conservative council leader Cllr Paul Watkins said: "Despite a ferocious onslaught from the Labour Party, who targeted north Deal and middle Deal wards, the general public is still confident in the Conservative administration and gave us a working majority of seven.

"Although this is not as good as the 11 we had, we can continue to make positive decisions for the area.

"It is a privilege serving the communities but difficult decisions do make it uncomfortable.

"We still have cuts to tackle. We have already taken out £2.4million from the budget and have another £600,000 this year to take out, as well as another million in the following year."
