A man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after a 23-year-old father from Deal was killed in an alleged hit and run.
Chris Jones, formerly a Castle Community College pupil, died at the scene after being hit by a Bentley while at work in Notting Hill, London, on Thursday, August 6.
George Claudiu Albu, 31, has been remanded in custody and also charged with causing death by driving a vehicle not in accordance with licence and while uninsured, and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.
Mr Jones, who was described as a doting father by his uncle, had recently started work as a gardener in Kensington and Chelsea, moving to the capital with his partner.
Mr Jones was employed by grounds maintenance company Quadron. It is thought he was redirecting traffic around his broken-down van.
His uncle Andrew Cowell, 49, was reported in The Standard newspaper saying: “He was just a nice, normal guy starting a new episode in London whose life has been tragically cut short.
“He was a one in a million guy and the best dad we could have hoped for,” - Sophie Lee, mother of Chris Jones's daughter
“We feel incredibly upset for his daughter, who he doted on.”
Writing online, his mother Ruth Jones said: “I cannot express my aching heart but Chris I loved you so very much but in my heart you will live forever my baby you will always be.”
Sophie Lee, mother of his daughter, wrote: “He was a one in a million guy and the best dad we could have hoped for.”
Quadron paid tribute to Mr Jones, describing him as “reliable and well-liked”. The company said in a statement: “Chris was making his routine nightly rounds to lock up the area’s parks when the vehicle he was driving broke down.
“Tragically, while Chris diligently remained with the vehicle to await recovery and ensure the security of the equipment on-board, his vehicle was struck by a car, resulting in fatal injuries to Chris.
“Despite only having worked for Quadron for a short time, Chris had already proved himself an extremely reliable and well-liked member of staff, and was a valued member of the Kensington and Chelsea team.
“He will be greatly missed by all who worked with him, and our thoughts are with Chris’s family and friends at this deeply upsetting time.”
A press spokesman from New Scotland Yard said: “George Claudiu Albu was remanded in custody to appear at Southwark Crown Court on February 3, 2016.
“The incident follows a fatal road traffic collision in Pembridge Villas, Notting Hill on Thursday, August 6.”
