It was uploaded to Facebook by Sofia Raquel Nunes, who said in Portuguese: "There are no words to describe this feeling. Until one day, princess."

She added: "The most beautiful angel that god chose to be with him. You are going to be remembered for ever and ever. Love you so much."

Students and staff members at Sandwich Technology School have laid flowers at the school’s peace gardens as a tribute to Miss Nunes, who lived in Walmer.

“Mara was sensitive, insightful and caring. She had a flair for English literature and drama and played an active role in all areas of the performing arts” - James McAuley

James McAuley, head of Discovery College at the school, said: “It was with immense sadness that we learned over the weekend of Mara’s passing.

“Mara was sensitive, insightful and caring. She had a flair for English literature and drama and played an active role in all areas of the performing arts including mentoring younger students.”

Among her many performances was a role in the school’s version of The Lord of the Flies in 2011.

She completed Year 11 where she achieved 11 GCSEs before leaving the school in 2014.

Mr McAuley added: “Mara had a sense of mischief and was a dynamic and vibrant young lady, who was well liked by both staff and students. She was supported by a group of very close friends, who have been left devastated by her loss.”

A book of remembrance has also been opened by past and present students, as well as staff members.

SECAmb confirmed an ambulance was at the scene and also assigned an air ambulance to assist and police closed the road overnight.

Investigating officer PC Jamie Woodhams, of the serious collision investigation unit, said: “Although we have several witnesses having seen the woman walking towards Dover, I would urge anyone who was travelling this section of road between Dover and Deal, which was about 700m prior to the junction with Ripple Road, to contact us as soon as possible.”

If you have any information, call the unit on 01622 798538, quoting CAD 10-1330.
