Opera goes down well with crowd at big
screen
by Graham Tutthill
More than 100 people went to Dover’s Market
Square on Tuesday night, June 8, to enjoy a performance of
Carmen, live from the Royal Opera House, via the Big Screen.
Many brought chairs and some brought picnics
to turn the evening into something of an occasion. Several people
travelled from Deal to be part of the event.
Dover was one of 14 Big Screen sites across
the country where the opera was being shown. Choir master Gareth
Malone, who was in Trafalgar Square, helped all those watching to
learn the Toreador Song before the show began.
It was
the first of the BP Summer Big Screen events which beams free
ballet and opera to the screens, but Dover has not been chosen to
receive the two ballet shows which are taking place this month and
in July.
England’s World Cup matches are being
shown on the screen, there’s a sing-along Mamma Mia! event on July
24, short films from local producers on July 25, and the Last Night
of the Proms will be shown on September 11.
