Take a peek around the world's newest
ship
by Graham Tutthill
The world’s newest ship has called at Dover on its way to its
christening in Hamburg.
MSC Magnifica is the latest addition to the MSC fleet and, like
its sister ships, has actress Sophia Loren as its godmother.
The ship, which has 14 decks, can accommodate 3,000 passengers
and has a crew of 1,000 from nearly 50 different nationalities.
Facilities on board include 17 bars and lounges, four
restaurants and a large buffet area, a 4D cinema, mini-bowling
alley, sports bar, spa and theatre.
Passengers will also be able to use one of the sun lounges and
swimming pools all the year round as the ship has been fitted with
a retractable roof, one of the largest ever installed on a cruise
ship.
During the visit to Dover, the Captain Giuliano Bossi and Kevin
Richardson from the Port of Dover exchanged crests and gifts to
mark the occasion.
Mr Richardson said the new ship was a fantastic addition to the
MSC fleet.
“MSC are right at the forefront of the development of cruise
ships. We have a long and successful association with MSC, with
their ships making 17 visits to the port this year.
“There is no doubt that the cruise business makes an immense
contribution to the town and the local economy, and we are intent
on developing that relationship. Long may it continue.”
Peter Pate, chairman of MSC in the UK, said: “MSC Magnifica is
not only our newest ship, it is the newest ship in the world
today.”
