After years of chasing her dream, Tracey Brook from Whitfield is about to live it.
The 31-year-old, who was born Tracey Shelvey, was signed by a top record label in March last year and this Valentine’s Day, she will release her first single, Star Struck.
It all came together for the mum-of-two, of Henniker Close in Whitfield, after a video of her singing with her friend, who is currently featuring in the West End, made it into the hands of a stage show producer.
Following this, Tracey was offered a role in a West End production but with her children in mind, she turned it down.
The video was then passed around London until it reached Downtown studios, who invited her to Soho for an audition. She attended and was called back almost immediately and offered a signing.
She said: “I was so nervous. I really messed up the audition. I’d prepared I Need by Maverick Sabre but changed my mind at the last minute and sang a gospel song.
“I thought my nerves had really come through. I walked away thinking I could have done better, but they called me the next day inviting me back for a signing!”
Tracey was one of only two out of 400 to be offered the deal.
“I went a bit hyperactive. I didn’t think in a million years they’d call me back,” she said.
She added: “I nearly gave up, I thought I’d just be a mum.”
After going through all the paperwork, Tracey went straight into the studio and starting working with Downtown Artists’ producers, writing and recording two albums worth of songs including Star Struck and her potential second single Real.
She has also written a song with her friend, Tori Lewis, from Dover, and had the chance to team up with Ellie Goulding. She’s acquainted herself with a few other well-known names too, who have given their seal of approval to Star Struck.
The former Eastry Primary School and Sandwich Technology School pupil was only ever interested in music and drama.
Although she didn’t really enjoy school life, she recalls one teacher, Jane Fisher, who always believed in her.
After leaving school she worked at Wingham Wildlife Park and completed a veterinary nursing degree, but music always remained in her life.
She was the lead singer in a local band called Heaven Scent and at every available opportunity she would gig.
She entered several local singing competitions including Deal’s Got Talent at The Hole in the Roof and Stars in their Eyes in Eastry and was always victorious.
At the age of 23, Tracey became a mother to Macaulay, now eight, and two years later, to Theo, six. Macaulay has high functioning autism and Tracey found that singing to him was a way of defusing situations when Macaulay found it difficult to express his emotions.
Since the age of 14, Tracey has written her own material. The words have always stemmed from personal experience.
She said: “Star Struck is a mixture of two songs I’ve written. One I wrote when I was at school and one I wrote about five years ago which I’ve mixed in.
“It’s about somebody I met and we were on different wavelengths. I thought we were going places and then a year later, he went travelling and I was left to my own devices.”
Shooting for the video will started yesterday in Faversham and the finished product will be available in April.
Tracey is hoping the song will take off and will change her life. She dreams of being able to buy a house and be able to fund her children through university.
She said: “I’ve been waiting for this for so many years, I’ve wanted it for that long. It’s not about the fame, it’s just about achieving a better life for my children.”
Star Struck will be available on iTunes from Saturday, February 14.
