Deal Rowing Club enjoyed their share of success in Worthing at the final CARA regatta of the season.

Their Ladies’ Senior Four of Lois Mullaney, Sharron Mullaney, Vicky Ward and Maisie-Jayne Lahr, alongside cox Jason Morgan, went into the race last weekend level with hosts Worthing 2-2 for the championship.

The girls crossed the line with a few lengths to spare over Worthing to secure the Ladies’ Senior Four Championship for the second consecutive year.

The Mullaney duo raced in the Ladies Senior Pair, too, and comfortably finished second.

Deal’s senior men secured a one-two finish.

The two crews lined-up against two Herne Bay crews and, from the start, both secured an early length lead. Coming into the turns, both Deal crews had a comfortable margin over Herne Bay.

The B crew then missed their turn, having to go for another turn just outside which cost them a few lengths.

That left the A crew of Will Dennis, Ben Smissen, Tyler Amos and Reece Mullaney, with cox Lois Mullaney, to finish with a comfortable lead while the B crew of Jason Morgan, Tom Barwell, Owen Mullaney and Reece Giles, with cox Sharron Mullaney, came second.

Their third win came in the Men’s Senior Sculls.

All scullers had great difficulty navigating the turns, seeing four competitors disqualified, but Dennis and Smissen came out cleanly and rowed in to secure a one-two finish over Bexhill.

In the Men’s Senior Pair, Deal went into the race knowing they needed to win, with Herne Bay leading Deal and Bexhill in their championship by one point.

Herne Bay, Bexhill and Deal B moved out into the lead with Deal A and Deal C just behind.

Coming out of the turns, Bexhill and Herne Bay began to move away with the former beating the latter, meaning the title will now go down to a row-off between the two.

The Deal B crew came in third, ahead of the Deal A pair of Smissen and Dennis. The Deal C crew of Giles and Barwell crossed the line sixth.

Amos raced in the Men’s Junior Sculls following his impressive second at Herne Bay and held second over a Bexhill crew by a length. As they came into the last 200m, the Bexhill sculler made another move and just finished ahead of Amos in third.

Morgan also competed in the Men’s Novice Sculls but didn’t finish.

The men’s novice four featured in one of the most competitive races of the day.

The crew had an enforced change, rowing with a Dover rower at the last minute who did very well.

Deal moved into second place, with a slight lead over Ryde. But as the crew came into the closing stages, they couldn’t quite hold off the challenge from Ryde and Herne Bay, finishing fourth ahead of Worthing.

Deal secured the senior aggregate and will now turn their focus to the South Coast Championships next month at Paignton where Deal will have three championship crews.

The club thanked Quinn Estates for their sponsorship throughout the season and assistance with the towing vehicle.

Dover Rowing Club were in action at the event, as well, and they secured three CARA league wins of their own.

James Hale and Jasper Mallet competed in the men’s Junior Pairs where they found themselves initially in a three-way race off the line with the two Ryde pairs. Hale and Mallet laid down the power from 200m and quickly pulled away.

Out of the turn, the young crew were 18 strokes ahead of the Ryde and Dover secured the win by several lengths. This victory secured the CARA Championship.

Hale and Mallet were joined in the men’s Junior Fours by Sebastian Steele and Finn Cockerell, with cox Freya Emmerson. Dover’s second crew of Max Jerden, Brendon Ulyatt, Kevin Ulyatt, Matt Barnett was coxed by Felicity Ulyatt, and Mark Weight was given dispensation to race for Deal.

Emmerson’s crew found themselves again in a battle with Ryde. Pushing hard, the young crew found themselves second at the turn. Emmerson’s crew were unable to catch Ryde at the line, but secured the CARA league win.

Weight’s crew secured fifth and Ulyatt’s crew finished sixth.

The J14 boys quad sculls crew of Josh Grassby, Ben Fagg, Bo Corby and Beau Everington-Nee, coxed by Barnett, raced over the 1k course and won again to remain undefeated in J14 races this year.

Mallet got a good start in the Novice Sculls and was racing with the top group of scullers. At the turn, he was locked in the race for third but came home in fourth.

In the Junior Sculls, Tom Stothart and Chris Hall raced each other.

Stothart got the better start moving into third, Stothart would drop to fourth after the turn, a place he would hold at the finish. Hall finished sixth overall. Hall and Stothart would combine in the men’s Junior Pairs too, where they came fifth.

The Men’s Junior Senior Fours saw two crews complete Ben Gomm, Jon Cook, Hall and Stothart, coxed by Emmerson, racing against Kevin Ulyatt, Weight, Matt McArdle and Barnett, coxed by Felicity Ulyatt. There was a blanket start with five crews, including Emmerson’s one, in the mix.

Emmerson’s crew were pressured off their buoy and were forced to change course, as they dropped to fifth. Ulyatt’s crew finished sixth.

Ladies Junior Fours featured Emmeline McArdle, Marie Cockerell, Emmerson and Maria West-Burrows, coxed by Hale. With some fast starting teams, Dover’s crew found themselves in fifth place by the turn, the position they maintained to the line.

In the Ladies Novice Fours, Dover had two crews. They were Emma Mansel, Cockerell, Heather Corby and Emmeline MacArdle coxed by Felicity Ulyatt, and Emma Sawkins, Emily Harvey, Holly Hannington, Canelle Ulyatt, coxed by Emmerson.

Felicity Ulyatt’s crew got the better start finding themselves with the leading crews initially. At the turn, they were holding fifth, the position they would hold at the finish. Emmerson’s crew would finish tenth.

In the Men’s Novice Fours, Max Jerden, Matt McArdle, Kevin Ulyatt and Brendon Ulyatt were coxed by Emmerson. Weight would again row with a Deal crew.

Weight’s crew got the better start and were competing for the lead before finishing third. Emmerson’s crew found themselves picking their way through the field, and moved up to fifth.

The Masters over-40s crew of West-Burrows, Cook, Kevin Ulyatt and Barnett coxed by Felicity Ulyatt would work hard for sixth.
