Richard Wallis successfully defended his PGA Surrey Open title by carding a 10-under-par total of 130 at Richmond Park GC.
It earned the Walmer & Kingsdown professional a three-shot victory over Jordan Godwin (Rochester & Cobham) and a cheque for £1,750 as well as a magnum of champagne.
Wallis said: “I played well but the key for me was yardage and distance control. The fairways were quite fiery, while the greens could be quite soft and it wasn’t easy to keep making birdie opportunities out there.”
After a solid first round of four-under-par 66, Wallis decided to be more aggressive in the second round. Two-under-par at the turn, he finished strongly with four more birdies to secure a comfortable victory.
He added: “I missed a couple of greens second time round but I only had two bogeys in 36 holes. I knew I had to be patient and keep giving myself as many chances as possible and I was pleased to finish strongly with three birdies in the last four holes.
“This result puts me in good shape for my 2013 goals of getting a top-three placing in the Virgin Atlantic PGA South Order of Merit and another crack at the PGA play-offs.”
