TWO Deal anglers, Emma Davies and Joyce Rogers, have helped England to win the ladies’ team silver medal at the world shore championships in France. The five-strong England team finished behind winners Brazil out of the nine competing countries in Biarritz.

For 22-year-old Emma, from Western Road, Deal, it completed a hat trick of silver medals in the championships. She said: “It was the sixth time I had competed in the championships and the third time I had won a team silver medal, but this was definitely the most satisfying for two reasons.

“Firstly, I won my first two silvers when the championships were held in Ireland and in Dover, and so I was used to the conditions, but it was much tougher in France. The second reason was that we finished in front of the French!”

Emma also did well in the individual event, achieving her highest-ever finish of fifth.

Meanwhile, Joyce, 52, from Links Road, Deal, finished 11th in the individual event despite having her tackle washed into the sea at one point by the mountainous seas.

In the men’s event, Deal tackle dealer Steve Allmark finished fifth in the individual event after looking a potential winner at one stage. Allmark, twice a runner-up in the championship, said: “I was in the gold medal position going into the last day, 18 points clear, but then I drew the worst possible peg position on the beach and it all went wrong.”

Allmark, who lives in Dover, helped England to finish fourth in the team event behind Italy.
