A Compulsory Purchase Order is due to be submitted to the Secretary of State, Eric Pickles.

Dover’s biggest eyesore, Burlington House, is one step closer to being knocked down as a compulsory purchase order (CPO) is due to be submitted to the Secretary of State.

If it is confirmed by Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, the order will allow Dover District Council to buy the land in St James’ Street, and Russell Street also known as the Dover Town Investment Zone.

The plans aim to enhance the current town centre with two anchor tenants already secured. Cineworld will be setting up a six-screen cinema, while Marks & Spencers will be relocating from their Biggin Street store.

The retail chain will open a Simply Food store in Townwall Street.

DDC aims to seize current retail spaces such as; The Light of India restaurant, The County Hotel, Dover Eurochange, the former tourist information centre, the unused St James’ carpark and the former bus depot.

Residential areas will also be bought, including the rear garden and yard of numbers 46,48 and 52 Castle Street.

Commercial premises known as Fanum House, in Townwall Street, will also be faced with the CPO.

Any objection to the order must be made in writing to the secretary of state.

It should include the title of the order, the grounds of objection and the objector’s address and interests in the land.

Leader of the council, Paul Watkins, said previously: “We have worked hard to develop the scheme to a point where we can commence the formal CPO process in respect of the land and interests currently not owned by the council.”
