Kent's Sam Northeast was in the England under-19 team who lost their opening one-day international against South Africa by 50 runs in Cape Town on Tuesday.
Northeast, who lives in Deal, made 20 as England made 209 all out in reply to South Africa's 259-8 from their 50 overs.
John Abrahams, the England tour manager, said: "The story of the match lies in the last column of the England innings scorecard - 10 scores between 11 and 33.
"All it needed was for one of the 10 to bat for longer and score 60 or 70 to challenge the South African total."
The teams meet again on Wednesday in the second ODI in Paarl.
