Rob Paul produced a performance to be proud of when he represented Europe against the USA in the One-Armed Golfers’ “Ryder Cup” in Louisville, Kentucky.
Although the USA won by 19.5 points to 8.5, Rob, a member of Walmer & Kingsdown GC, won three of his five matches in the inaugural event for golfers who, because of various disabilities, have to play one-handed.
And 27-year-old Rob, who was born with cerebral palsy, described it as a “awe-inspiring experience” which included playing his final match in 75mph winds.
He said: We caught the tail-end of Hurricane Ike, and trying to play golf in 75mph winds was something else. You could hear trees cracking and branches were flying.
“Because the team were flying home the next day the match had to be finished (on the Sunday). A couple of times, I putted up towards the hole, and then the ball was blown right back to my feet, it was incredible.”
