KAREN STUPPLES produced a superb final round to win her first major tournament at the Weetabix Women’s British Open.
The 31-year-old from Deal carded an eight-under par 64 on Sunday to finish five shots clear of Australia’s Rachel Teske and claim the £160,000 first prize. She becomes the first home winner of the event in 13 years.
Stupples total of 19-under par equalled the Weetabix tournament record set by Karrie Webb here in 1997 and also matched the lowest total in a women's major championship, set by Dottie Pepper at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in 1999.
Knowing she needed a good start to put some pressure on early in the round, Stupples holed a 15-foot putt on the first for an eagle three. Things got even better at the par-five second where she holed a five-iron for an albatross two, only the second ever in a women’s major championship. Stupples admitted it was a turning point.
She said: "It was at that point I though to myself, 'crikey' this could be my day. Up to that point, I really didn't know how it was going to go. I thought I just had to get off to a good start, maybe birdie-birdie, but eagle-albatross was just unbelievable.”
Another important moment came at the short 15th hole. Teske made a par while Stupples sank a 25-foot putt from off the green for a vital birdie.
"I was so pumped when that went in, so happy to see it drop. That was big for me," she said.
And in a strong finish, Stupples also birdied the 16th and 17th to pull five shots ahead.
Stupples hopes her victory might inspire some of the children watching to take up the sport and she is donating part of her winnings to junior golf in Kent.
She added: "Every time I watched Laura Davies play, it was always very inspiring to me to watch them win tournaments. It just shows you never to give up and you should always keep fighting for your dreams because you never know what is going to happen.”
