More than 100 migrants have been stopped by UK authorities today - breaking yesterday's record of 90.

The French authorities are also dealing with multiple small boat incidents and have detained 30 people.

The Home Office this afternoon said there were six incidents on the British side of the Channel this morning, which were as follows (approximate times):

• 1am. A Border Force vessel stopped a RHIB (rigid-hulled inflatable boat), which had 32 people, 26 males and six females who said they were Iranian and Iraqi.
• 2.45am. Border Force stopped another RHIB with 13 people, 12 men and one woman, who presented themselves as Iranian and Afghan.
• 3.55am. Border Force intercepted a third RHIB with 15 people - 14 males and one female, who said they were Iranian nationals.
• 8am. Kent Police detained nine people, eight males and one female, at Sandgate beach near Folkestone. They presented themselves as Iranian nationals.

• 10am. Border Force stopped a RHIB with 13 men who said they were Iranian, Pakistani, Afghan and Iraqi.
• 10.45am. Border Force intercepted a fifth RHIB with 23 people, 16 men and seven women. They presented themselves as Iraqi, Iranian and Syrian nationals.

The Home office said that seven of the people from the first, third and fourth incidents claimed to be minors and, subject to to age assessment, will be taken into the care of social services.

The record for the amount of migrants found on the British side in one day keeps being broken.

It had been 79 on December 4 and 90 yesterday.

Migrants found are usually take to Dover for processing.

Full details of incidents on the French side today are not yet known.

British Security Minister Brandon Lewis said ;"We are tackling illegal migrant crossings on all fronts, right alongside our French and Belgian partners.

“We have extra patrols on French beaches, drones, specialist vehicles and detection equipment which has been deployed to stop small boats leaving European shores and we’re supporting security enhancements and increasing intelligence sharing in Belgium and France."

“And it’s working. The majority of migrants who attempt this journey are being stopped, only 25% have made it to the UK this year, compared with 48% last year.”

Between Monday, January 20 and this Wednesday, February 5, French authorities have intercepted 216 migrants preventing 10 crossing on land and eight at sea.

The Home Office says that this year, as a result of its operations, five people have been convicted for human smuggling, receiving a total of eight years and four months imprisonment.

The proportion of successful crossing was much lower last month (25%) than 12 months before in January 2019 (48%).

Last year 100 people smugglers were convicted and sentenced to a total of 320 years.
