The A2 is closed in both directions following a crash involving five vehicles.
The busy stretch at Jubilee Way, Dover, has been shut since the accident at about 8.15pm last night.
It is likely to remain closed all morning while work continues to clear a “significant” fuel spillage and resurface the road.
The emergency repairs are being carried out on the stretch between the A20 Eastern Docks roundabout and the A258 Duke of York roundabout.
Drivers are warned to expect delays in the area.
Engineers have confirmed the whole road needs resurfacing, which should be finished before the afternoon rush hour.
A National Highways spokesperson said: “National Highways area team crews have completed clear up work the road will however require resurfacing.
“At present there is currently no estimate for when re-opening of the road can take place.”
Traffic is being diverted at the scene via local routes by the emergency services.
Police and the fire service were called to deal with the aftermath of the collision.
A police spokesperson said: “This was a collision in Jubilee Way involving five vehicles which was reported to us last night at 8.15pm.
“Officers attended and there were no serious injuries.
“The road was closed due to debris and a spillage of diesel. The road closure was being managed by Highways.”
A fire service spokesperson added: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called at 8.42pm (11 December) to Jubilee Way, Dover to reports of a crash between three HGVs and a car.
“Three fire engines attended, and crews assisted Kent Police and SECAmb.”
