Part of the A2 was shut for four hours after what police describe as a "serious collision".
It happened near Lydden, Dover, and officers were joined by paramedics from with South East Coast Ambulance Service.
A police spokesman said: "Officers were called to a report of a collision involving two vehicles on the coastbound A2 near the traffic lights junction with Geddinge Lane at around 1pm today.
"Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes as the carriageway remains closed in both directions and diversions are in place."
The accident is believed to involve a car and motorcycle.
It delayed traffic trying to go directly between Dover and Canterbury.
An update from a Kent Highways, at about 2.30pm, said the A2 coastbound was closed between the A260 Canterbury Road and the A256 Whitfield West.
Motorists were also held on the A2 London-bound due to crash and vehicles travelling from the Port of Dover were encouraged to use the A20 and M20.
