TWO men have been arrested after firearm components, knives and ammunition were found in a vehicle at Dover Docks by Revenue and Customs officers.

Both men, Republic of Czechoslovakia nationals from Salford, who were charged with smuggling offences, have appeared at Folkestone Magistrates Court and have been remanded in custody.

Greater Manchester Police assisted with house searches in Salford at the request of the HMRC Criminal Investigation team based in Dover.

Chris Ballard, HMRC Investigation, Dover, said: “HMRC at the borders works closely with our partners in the Police and Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) in stemming the flow of drugs, firearms and other illicit goods smuggled into the UK.

"This case clearly demonstrates mutual understanding, and our joint commitment to bring to justice those who erode the fabric of our society.

"Anti-smuggling checks by HMRC officers at ports and airports regularly lead to the detection of firearms as well as component parts destined for UK criminal groups.”

A search of the vehicle on Tuesday night revealed component parts of illegal firearms, several offensive weapons, including knives and a cosh, and in excess of 400 rounds of ammunition were also identified.
