A2 closed coastbound towards Dover from Womenswold to Whitfield after crash

Motorists faced delays on the A2 this morning after a crash between a car and a lorry.

Police and firefighters were called at 2.48am to deal with the incident and close the road.

The road had been completely shut coastbound between A260 at Womenswold and the A256 Whitfield Hill near Dover.

The crash has closed part of the A2 heading to Dover. (5455529)

A diversion was in place via Hawkinge and West Hougham towards Dover on the A260 and A20 before one lane re-opened at about 5.30am.

Highways England also advised motorists heading to the port to consider using the M20 and A20 instead.

The road had been completely shut coastbound between A260 at Womenswold and the A256 Whitfield Hill near Dover but one lane has now reopened.

A spokesman for the police said: "We were called at 2.48am on Friday 16 November regarding a collision involving a car and a lorry on the coastbound carriageway of the A2 near Aylesham. The car is reported to have struck a building and then caught fire.

"Patrols and Kent Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and the carriageway was closed while the fire was extinguished.

"No injuries have been reported. The car driver left the scene prior to police attendance and enquiries are ongoing to locate them.

"The coastbound carriageway was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident and one lane has now reopened. There may some congestion in the area until the car is recovered."
