A potentially explosive fire, including aerosol butane canisters, was discovered in a derelict garage in Military Road last night.

The large pile of rubbish, including a sofa and carpet, was tackled by firefighters from Dover and Folkestone just before midnight.

A Kent Fire and Rescue spokesman from Dover has said it has been labelled "suspected deliberate ignition" and that the police have been informed.

He told the Mercury: "We are sending a report to the local council as there was a build up of rubbish."

The fire took half an hour to put out using breathing apparatus and a hose reel.
