A man has been found dead after an organisation supporting armed forces servicemen and veterans reported him missing on social media.

An appeal was launched to find Steve Baird on Wednesday after he went missing in Dover.

He was seen in Hythe on Wednesday between 10am and 11am heading west along the Royal Military Canal, carrying a backpack and carrier bags.

But the mental health support service for past and present members of the armed forces, All Call Signs, posted a tragic update yesterday at 3.20pm to say his body had been found.

In a statement on Facebook, a spokesperson for the group wrote: "Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and all who knew him.

"We respectfully ask that you give his loved ones time to process this information.

"Thank you to the members of this community who assisted in the sharing of information and physical searching. Your effort means everything."

Police have been contacted for a comment.
