Metropolitan Police alerted Dover Coastguard to the situation who called the Lifeboat crew to recover the body at 8.30pm on Friday. They returned by 10pm and were met by police and the coroner.

A spokesman for Dover RNLI said: "A young girl was reported missing from London. We were alerted by Met police to say she was in this area.

"A police helicopter went up and located the person on the beach. The lifeboat went in and recovered that person from the beach.

"It's not a nice job that we have to do but it's necessary that we do it, it brings closure to somebody."

Kent Police were also at the scene and have been approached for more details.
