The Prime Minister's face lit up the White Cliffs of Dover, in a protest message over the government's handling of the coronavirus crisis.

Boris Johnson's response to the outbreak has been compared to Neville Chamberlain's - “peace for our time” moment, in the black and white projection beamed onto the county's landmark last night.

It is the latest campaign by the activist group, Led By Donkeys.

The mock up featured Mr Johnson holding a scrap of paper saying “Highest death toll in Europe”.

The protest group is well known for its giant billboards of politicians’ tweets, in April last year a giant 'tweet' appeared on the cliffs.

The Brexit-themed image, featured Dominc Rabb saying he didn't realise how dependent Britain was on the Dover-Calais route.

The group said their latest creation was on the government's "profound failure" during the crisis and it compared Mr Johnson's conduct to Chamberlain’s appeasement policy in the lead-up to the Second World War.

The giant video stream included clips of the Prime Minister speaking in the early days of the pandemic, including: “Basically we’re saying wash your hands and business as usual.”

A spokesman for Led By Donkeys said: “We held back from doing it for a long time, I suppose in a sense we were giving Johnson the benefit of the doubt.

“But as we started working on a timeline of government action on the coronavirus it became clear that this was an absolutely profound failure.”
