Campaign hots up to stop Burmese activist being deported
Published: 10:24, 10 September 2008
Fears for a Burmese democratic activist threatened with deportation have led to a petition being launched to keep him in Britain.
Min Hein, who is awaiting deportation at the Dover Immigration Removal Centre,
fears he will be imprisoned, tortured and possibly killed by the Burmese militia if he is sent back.
He has been a leading activist in fighting for human rights for people in his home country since he arrived in the UK.
His support of Suu Kyi, prisoner of conscience and leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma, led to him being jailed for six years in Burma.
His political activities include co-founding the Burma Political Forum in 2007.
Myo Thein, of the Burmese Democratic Movement Association, began the petition asking Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to override the deportation order.
