The green light has been given to the first phase of a new major housing development at the former Connaught Barracks.
Dover District Council has granted planning permission for Kent-based developer, Ramac Holdings, to build 64 two, three and four bedroom homes on land owned by Homes England.
Work at the site - which offers impressive views across Dover and out to the English Channel - is expected to start this summer.
Outline planning permission for the 64 units at the Officers' Mess site was granted in 2016.
Cllr Keith Morris, leader of Dover District Council, said: “We’re delighted to see progress at Connaught Barracks, identified as a major regeneration and housing development site in the Adopted Core Strategy and bringing an exciting range of new homes in a fantastic location.”
Barry Cummins, general manager for Land Acquisition at Homes England, said: “We are committed to working with ambitious partners to accelerate housing delivery.
"I’m delighted that Dover District Council has granted planning permission for the first phase of development on the iconic and historic Connaught Barracks site providing much needed new homes for the local community.”
James Hambling, director of Ramac Holdings, said: “We are very pleased that planning permission has been granted and look forward to delivering this stunning development which will capitalise on the history, location and captivating views from the site.
"Early enquiries for homes are very welcome, for information please contact connaught@ramac-group.com.”
Connaught Barracks sits adjacent to Fort Burgoyne which The Land Trust is currently restoring with a view to permanently opening to the public.
Particular attention has been paid to the scale and design of the development in relation to Dover Castle, Fort Burgoyne’s Western Battery Wing, and the town.
Dover District Council is currently considering a planning application for 300 new homes on the rest of the Connaught Barracks site (planning reference number: 19/00447).
A total 500 homes are earmarked for the 55-hectare site.
