A GERMAN swimmer today missed breaking the cross-Channel record by less than three minutes.

Christof Wandratsch, aged 37, set off from Shakespeare Beach at Dover this morning hoping to beat Chad Hunderby's 1994 record of seven hours 17 minutes.

But he took two-and-a-half minutes longer to reach the French coast.
