A single father who told a Greek police officer to go back to “******* Poland” has admitted racially abusing her.

Damien Beer appeared at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court this week following a drunken incident in Canterbury.

Beer, of Bunkers Hill Avenue, Dover had been involved in a brawl in October 2021 when he was approached by officers.

Although he was initially co-operative, Beer became aggressive and attempted to flee while the officers were escorting him back to their vehicle.

After complaining his handcuffs were on too tight the 30-year-old shouted “Go back to ******* Poland, you b****,” addressing PC Giakou.

The landscaper, admitting the offence, said: “Yeah I did say that but I didn’t know it was racist.”

A victim impact statement from PC Giakou, who moved to the UK from Greece more than five years ago, was read out to the court.

She said: “These comments have made me question if I made the right choice to move to England and join the police.”

An assault charge stemming from events on the same evening was dropped against the defendant.

Beer pleaded guilty on Tuesday to racially aggravated intentional harassment and was handed a fine of £185 with a £35 surcharge.
