The man who started Dover’s first and only social supermarket has been elected onto Dover District Council.

Labour’s Nathaniel Richards received a narrow majority of 7 votes with 573 people preferring him to represent the Buckland ward.

He beat Callum Warriner (Cons) who wracked 566 votes and Timothy Turner (Ukip) with 192.

Mr Richards said: “I’m so relieved. I knew it was going to be close but seven votes’ difference is just nuts. I’m going to give it my all and I can’t wait to get started.”

He is 26 and has never been a councillor before.

Mr Richards is well known locally for running the Nifties social supermarket at Charlton Shopping Centre selling cut price food for low income families.

Meanwhile Ukip lost their seat to Labour in the Maxton, Elms Vale and Priory ward. Ann Napier (Lab) won with 647, a majority of 80 over the nearest candidate Roger Walkden (Con) with 567 votes.

Figures for the other contenders are: Peter McDermott (Ukip) 159. Graham Wanstall (Ind) 110. Ballot papers issued 1, 488. Turnout 27.69%.
